Chuck Versus the Coup d'Etat

Original air date October 11, 2010

Episode 4 season 4

Synopsis

This episode picks up where Cubic Z left off. While watching the surveillance footage in Castle, Morgan and Chuck are discussing what was Sarah thinking and what was Chuck thinking when the apparent proposal freaked them both out. What would have happened if it was an actual proposal?

Chuck wants to know what Sarah’s answer would have been and Morgan points out Chuck’s expression while asking what is going on there.

While acknowledging the skill the pair have with cute moments, Morgan points out their relationship has communication problems and suggests Chuck use the book currently being promoted in the Buy More.

Devon and Ellie are experiencing issues with Devon focusing too much on the baby and the pregnancy. Ellie is feeling like they need a break, a ‘babymoon’ to refocus.

Costa Gravas Premier Goya sends his military commandant Turrini to Burbank and General Beckman instructs Team Bartowski to watch the Costa Gravas embassy to see what is going on. Casey is excepted from this mission due to his gunshot wound from Cubic Z.

Chuck brings up the issue of the mistaken proposal and their communication issues with Sarah and suggests that they try some of the suggestions in the book Morgan gave him.

Beckman redirects Chuck and Sarah when Turrini actually ends up in Echo Park and not the embassy. He arrives at Ellie and Devon’s apartment to tell Devon that he is needed in Costa Gravas.

Chuck and Sarah arrive to find Turrini playing a disk for Ellie and Devon with Goya inviting them to Costa Gravas to thank Devon for saving his life in Angel de la Murte. Ellie glows at the idea of a vacation and Sarah assures them that Costa Gravas is safe. Chuck sees this as an opportunity as well and volunteers he and Sarah go along to make Devon more comfortable.

Morgan tries to help Casey while convalescing. Casey’s daughter Alex arrives and Casey realizes they have been communicating.

Sarah and Chuck discuss going to Costa Gravas and Chuck explains they could use the time to be regular people and work on communicating.

The group is welcomed at the Palace by Goya and his wife Hortensia. They go to a banquet in Devon’s honor, featuring a 9-foot tall marble statue of Devon as a tribute.

While enjoying the party, Chuck flashes and tells Sarah there is a Soviet-style weapon behind a red door. Sarah calls Casey for advice, as he spent two weeks in the Palace while trying to overthrow Goya’s government.

Chuck and Sarah slip away from the party and find the door, with Sarah picking the lock, but then must listen as Devon and Ellie have an intimate encounter on the other side of the door after they have closed it behind them.

While they are looking for the weapon, Goya’s wife initiates a coup d’etat during the party and shoots the head off the marble statue in the process.

Chuck and Sarah are interrupted by the fight and must use their spy skills and the intersect to fight their way out and save Ellie and Devon. Goya meets them as they are leaving and escorts them to safety through a weapons control room and they escape via his private jet back to Burbank and Casey’s apartment.Morgan goes to Big Mike for advice on his relationship with Alex and his fear of Casey.

Back in Castle, Chuck goes back to discussing the questions in the book.Sarah scoffs at the suggestion that they deal with an uncomfortable topic by talking about it while the other is asleep.Sarah sees the book displayed in the Buy More and reiterates to Chuck she wants to take it slow.

Chuck flashes on a photo Sarah took of the control room and realizes it is for nuclear weapons. Beckman confronts Goya with the revelation and he admits most of the missiles are in the jungle and pointed at American targets. He asserts it is safe because two keys are needed to launch the missiles. He has one and his wife has the other one.

Turrini tries to capture Goya, revealing he is in league with Hortensia. Casey saw this coming and tries to save Goya but is knocked unconscious by Goya to save him from being killed by Turrini. Goya then returns to Costa Gravas with Turrini.

Beckman sends Team Bartowski to infiltrate Costa Gravas, destroy the nuclear control room and find the missiles while helping Goya to get his country back.

They enter through the Palace tunnels to the control room to place explosives and find Hortensia making a video about her coup.

Morgan goes to the author of the communication book to get advice about his and Alex’s relationship. Big Mike interrupts and tells Morgan to kiss Alex for his answer.

Hortenia and Goya are arguing because he keeps interrupting. A gun is drawn by Goya on his wife and Chuck bursts into the room to stop the bloodshed and attempts to mediate their argument. Sarah joins to help.

Turrini tries to shoot Goya but Chuck flashes and disarms him while Casey enters and helps to capture him. Goya and Hortensia agree to work together and reconcile while Sarah grabs the keys to the control panel.

Alex visits Morgan at the Buy More and he stutters around trying to define their relationship. She launches herself at him and kisses him. He hesitates when she asks if he wants a relationship and she starts to leave. He stops her with a kiss.

Team Bartowski dismantles the control room but Chuck flashes on a Russian label, identifying it as belonging to Alexei Volkoff and Project Beacon. Goya admits to knowing about Volkoff and Frost, telling Chuck how dangerous it is but he will share his files.

Chuck talks to Ellie back home, telling her that he is looking for their mom. She worries that there might not be any more to the story but Chuck insists they need to know.

After going to bed, Sarah asks Chuck if he is asleep. When he doesn’t respond, she tells him nothing will change her love for him and if he were to really ask her to marry him, she would say yes. Chuck, pretending to be asleep, smiles slightly.

Points of Interest
  • Chuck wears another white suit after complaining about wearing a white suit in Chuck vs the Wookiee
  • Ellie sees Chuck in action as a full-fledged spy. She realizes that what she asked him to give up was a lot and he was good at his job. He missed his chance to be honest and tell her the truth about being back with the CIA.
  • There are four relationships in four stages in this episode. Alex and Morgan in the first stage. Chuck and Sarah working out their pre-marriage issues. Ellie and Devon working through the baby issues. Hortensia and Alejandro lose and regain their marriage trust.
  • The intervention scene in the control room is reminiscent of Chuck vs the Three Words scene in the apartment courtyard. He is trying to keep Karl from shooting Carina and is also trying to make a point about love with Sarah. The physical set up of the scene is also similar with the woman held at gunpoint and Sarah listening to Chuck while trying to help.
